The idea of forming Rotary Club of Margao was brought up by enthusiastic Rotarians from Belgaum in the month of December 1962, led by late Rtn. M.G. Hannamshet. He, with the help of some local persons, succeeded in getting together about 20 prominent persons of Margao. The Organizational meeting was held on 20th December 1963 at Shri Pandurang Timblo’s office at Kadar Manzil, Margao.
When our club was formed, the destiny of Rotary International was in hands of Rtn. Nitish Lahari a member of Rotary Club of Calcutta. The R.I. Theme was “Kindle the spark Within”. It was on 23rd March 1963 that our club was presented its charter by District Governor Rtn. K.S. Menon at BPS Sports Club, to form the second Rotary Club of Goa, first being Rotary Club of Panjim. The BPS Grounds ere beautifully decorated and brilliantly illuminated for the occasion. PDG Rtn. Kirpekar also graced the occasion.
Besides Rotarians from Rotary Club of Panjim, many Rotarians from neighboring states attended the function. Rotary Club of Belgaum, which is our sponsoring club, was well represented by President Rtn. I.R. Ingle, Rtn. Dr. Hannamshet, Rtn. Kapadia and other members. Dr. Hannamshet, on behalf of Rotary Club of Belgaum, presented Rotary lapel pins to every charter member of our club. The ceremony commenced at 7:00 pm followed by fellowship and buffet dinner. After the official function the guests were entertained by Goan folk dances and songs. Rtn. Pandurang Timblo was the Charter President and Rtn. Dr. D.V. Kerkar was the Charter Secretary.
